This formulation was prompted by the English-Italian dictionary which I have lately been consulting as part of a largely unsuccessful effort to improve my tourist Italian, wherein usages are appended (dangle) like grapes (or scarabs), with the word at hand replaced by an underlined space. In this case the mock usage-entry refers to a hipster’s rhyme and prompts fairly limp penile humor in the text which follows (as well as the title of this space and the last phrase). The title for this space recalls the kind of April Fool’s jokes which involved calling various places and asking for Dick SoandSo or similar puns (though ‘SoandSo,” i.e., sew and sew, here in conjunction with “shun” and “airy” also brings to mind the Bobbitt trial and its castration and subsequent sewing and, oddly, also makes me think of Cliff Arquette, the comedian known as Charley Weaver, a favorite of my mother, who was said to be from Mount Airy Pennsylvania, a town which when we saw it last year travelling with my sons seemed more suburban than I had imagined it would be). We were visiting my brother Brian in Pennsylvania. Another brother, Tim, is himself a comedian and, like most comedians, prone to castration jokes and penile humor. Most fictions are, like many jokes, also riddles and emphasize the missing parts. Although one I am able to remember emphasizes wholeness (albeit got up in a Lacanian sausage).
